Protocinema in collaboration with Artspace at Kunsthalle Tbilisi presents Angelica Mesiti’s new three-channel video installation Relay League, 2017. Mesiti’s installation engages with the language of Morse code as an extinct form of communication. In this case a musician-composer and three different dancers who have developed their own movement-sign-language each interpret the final Morse code message sent by the French Navy on 31st January 1997: ‘Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence.’

For over a decade, Mesiti’s oeuvre has investigated non-verbal forms of communication. Inspired by this poetic Morse code signal, Mesiti translates the dots and dashes through music and performance to enable the language to ‘speak’ once more. Relay League is installed across three halls of a disused wine factory, built in the center of Tbilisi in 1896. Presenting this work now, during a resurgence of art and culture in post-Soviet Georgia, communication takes on an additional layer of significance of voice and agency.

Relay League is composed of three video projections, each one in its own hall, connected by a single audio track. The three videos bring to the surface aspects of human subjectivity and emotional states such as uncertainty, intimacy and humility. The first video features musician-composer Uriel Barthélémi translating the Morse code, which is particularly useful in moments of crisis, into a percussive score that permeates throughout the entire installation. The second video is a unique collaboration between two dancers, Sindri Runudde, who is affected by impaired vision, and Emilia Wibron Vesterlund. The pair have developed an intimate and corporeal ‘language’ that communicates movement, where Emilia guides Sindri’s understanding of choreography through the touch and feel of her body against his. Mesiti’s third video for Relay League features dancer Filipe Lourenço interpreting Uriel’s percussive sounds with improvised movement. Mesiti uses the poetics of the image and an anthropological approach to explore voice, language and culture. The artist first came to prominence with her performance-based videos engaging with music as a vestigial residue of culture.

Mesiti’s exhibition with Protocinema in collaboration with Kunsthalle Tbilisi launches this new art space, founded by Irena Popiashvili and Lika Chkuaseli, coupled with a site-responsive installation by Nika Kutateladze at A. Kazbegi Street # 53.

Relay League was originally commissioned by Artspace, Sydney with support by Commissioning Partner the Keir Foundation and the Australia Council for the Arts.

Angelica Mesiti was born in 1976 in Sydney and lives in Paris. Mesiti will represent Australia at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.
