Protocinema presents Kiralık, Satılık (For Rent, For Sale) a group show with works by: Ani Çelik Arevyan, Antonio Cosentino, Gülşah Mursaloğlu, and The Soundscape of Istanbul project, a group show responding to yet another urban transformation period in İstanbul on different axes of temporality. Drawing its inspiration from the plentiful “for rent” and “for sale” ads on the windows of emptied apartments around Beyoğlu area, the exhibition is curated with İbrahim Cansızoğlu,.

Kiralık Satılık, takes place in the former Hamursuz Fırını, considering this current urban shift, with its multiple causes and effects, through a survey of visual imagination, urban sounds and materiality.  Antonio Cosentino sets the narrative with his short story telling the aftermath of the appearance of an imaginary wall dividing İstanbul.  His fiction is part of a new installation bringing together an assemblage of found bottle caps, collected in both places, a sitting area and works on paper giving hesitation towards uncertain times yet to come.  Ani Çelik Arevyan looks towards the past with a set of diptych photographs from her latest series: As Is. Arevyan makes photographs rather than taking them and describes these images as a non-linear “story-board” of her life.  In this series she juxtaposes images she has chosen from her archive across many years and many cities.  These pairings conjure moments of recognition and simultaneously displacement, asking timeless esoteric, unanswered questions.

Gülşah Mursaloğlu new commission “Ongoing Centuries of Meanderings around the Serpent Column from Delphi” 2017, explores the historical context as well as materiality of urban transformation with her new sculptural installation made, in part, of calcite, limestone and marble.  Composed of same chemical compounds these materials indicate the exposure to different levels of atmospheric pressure over long periods.  Limestone is known as “İstanbul stone” because of its sheer abundance in the city and has always been a widespread  construction material since the Byzantine period.  Here, coupled with other day matter, such as walnut shells and yeast, Mursaloğlu follows the transformation of these materials through aesthetic means, and time.  All the works in Kiralık, Satılık share their space with specific acoustics by The Soundscape of Istanbul project.  The project, conducted by Pınar Çevikayak Yelmi during her doctoral research at Koç University, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Nina Ergin, Assoc. Prof. Sertaç Kakı and Assoc. Prof. Asım Evren Yantaç approaches  everyday traditions and daily urban life of Istanbul from a sonic perspective. The group presents an opportunity for the audience to engage with the sonic cultural heritage of Istanbul through an interactive installation, designed by Yelmi and Yantaç, and developed by Hüseyin Kuşcu.
